SOAP OPERA NEWS SALUTES
GH'S STEFAN AND KATHERINE:
Soap Opera News
May 6, 1997
They say lightening doesn't strike twice, but on soap operas it does.
General Hospital has certainly proved that with the rematch of former Days
of Our Lives super-couple Stephen Nichols (Patch) and Mary Beth Evans (Kayla)
as Stefan and Katherine.
Many compelling moments have occurred between their characters since Nichols
joined GH last summer, but none was more moving than when Stefan got Katherine
to stand and come to him for the first time.
Ever since Stefan fired a gun into what he thought was just a tree and left
innocent bystander Katherine paralyzed, GH has been slowly building up a
passionate--yet dangerous--relationship between these two. (After all, she
does know that he is the one who put her in a wheelchair and yet she chooses
to forgive him, while the newly married Stefan has fallen for his victim.)
When Katherine stood up between her physical therapy parallel bars and looked
into Stefan's eyes, we were propelled back almost a decade to an equally
pivotal Days moment--when a mute Kayla regained her voice and was able to
speak her wedding vows to Patch rather than sign them.
"Don't be afraid," Stefan told Katherine, Bringing us back to the present.
And she wasn't. She took the difficult first step and walked to him. We thought
they would kiss, and we longed for that moment, but instead, their looks
said everything. (The kiss came later.) The depth of their feelings for each
other was palpable, and we could see that even they conceded that these feelings
were taboo.
GH has wisely take advantage of the proven chemistry between Nichols and
Evans, and we're sure that these characters will share many more memorable
moments as the storyline progresses. We wouldn't think of missing them.
