Kayla arrives in Stockholm (Chosen by Liz) aired October 15, 1986
Background Info- In Stockholm, Roman, Hope and Steve found Lana--dead.
The police arrived and suspected
them as the culprits. Steve tried to escape, and was shot in a scuffle...he
and Hope escaped together as Roman
was arrested. As Hope tried to take care of Steve, he called out for Kayla,
prompting Hope to call Kayla for help
in treating Steve's wounds. Kayla gave her instructions and begged her to
get Steve to a doctor. Kayla, extremely
worried, took the next flight out of Salem.
The Scene: (Next Morning)
Hope has just gone into the other room for something or other. Steve is trying
to lay back on the bed when there
is a knock on the door. Steve calls out for Hope, loudly. Then sort of
mumbles/whispers her name again. He is
worried, thinking some bad dude is at the door.
Kayla walks in, wearing a white sweater, and Steve's face is full of relief.
He whispers her name. Kayla's holding
a doctor's bag.
Kayla checks up on Steve's vital signs to make sure he is alright.
Afterwards, Steve wants to know why Kayla came all the way to Stockholm.
He puts his arm around her shoulder/neck and intently looks at her:
Steve: Why did you come here? Why?
Kayla: 'Cause my brother was in trouble
Steve: Oh really?
Kayla: Why else would I come?
Hope interrupts and sees that Kayla arrived. Hope is relieved to see Kayla,
because now she can go and check
up on Roman while Kayla stays with Steve. Steve doesn't want Hope to go alone,
he tries to get up to help her,
and Kayla has to calm him down.
Kayla starts to check Steve's wound.
Steve: First my vitals, and now my bandage
Kayla: I have to dress it...
Steve: Hmmm, where have I heard that before?
Kayla: You know, it's really a shame that you got hit in the shoulder, instead of your mouth
Steve: Thats not very nurselike, nurse Brady.
(Kayla takes the bandage, and pulls it a little too hard accidentally. Steve moans out in pain)
Kayla: I'm sorry..well, you're lucky, bullet went straight through
Steve: told you baby, I've got 9 lives
(Kayla's staring at his chest and can barely mutter a word)
Steve: See anything you like?
Kayla: (nervous) Why don't you be quiet, and I'll try not to hurt you
Steve: (quietly) You do that...you know you're making a regular habit out of this baby
Kayla: What?
Steve: (intently) I seem to remember a time you scraped me off the pier,
did the same thing to me,
remember that?
Kayla: I remember...and I uh, wish you'd break this habit of tempting fate
Steve: What and deny you the pleasure of nursing me back to health?
Kayla: That seems to be our relationship, doesn't it?
Steve: Relationship? Why Ms. Kayla, it's so sudden, I didn't know
Kayla: I just meant...well you know what I mean. Unlike you, I try to steer clear of trouble...
Steve and Kayla proceed to get into an argument, with Steve telling her she
needs to go back to Salem and
stay out of trouble, while Kayla insists on staying until her brother is
cleared. Steve insists they can't trust the
police, and too many people have already died.
Steve: How do we find out who the real police are? Wake up Kayla, they stopped
giving out white hats when
the Lone Ranger went off the air. This is the real world you're dealing with
now. This is my world. It's not
very pretty is it?
(I happen to think he's very pretty at this point, BTW :) :) )
Kayla gives Steve some water and a pill.
Kayla: Here take this...
Steve: What?
Kayla: Just take it!
Steve: Is it gonna make me large or small?
Kayla: It's going to make you lie still for a while, not move around so much.
Steve: What's the matter, You don't trust me?
Kayla: Should I?
Later, Steve is starting to fall asleep. Kayla is dabbing his forehead with a wet towel, to
cool him down. Steve calls out to her...
Kayla: I'm right here...
Steve: I appreciate you being here
Kayla: You're just delirious from the sedative you don't know what you're saying
Steve: I know...I know...what I said (falls asleep)
Kayla: "ok, it's ok"...(she lightly caresses his face)
Hope arrives. She and Kayla talk about Roman. Later, after Kayla emerges
after a long stay in the
other room, she asks Hope how Steve is doing.
Hope: Look at him, just lying there. He looks so innocent, not so rough and tough.
Kayla: Ah, he's not so tough
Hope: You found that out too, huh? You know, he reminds me an awful lot of Bo...
Kayla: Does he?
Hope: Ya. Especially when we first met.You know, Mr. Tough guy, nobody gets to Mr. Bo Brady
Kayla: You did...
Hope: Ya I guess I did. But he was fighting and scratching all the way. You
know what I think? The tougher
they are on the outside, the softer they are on the inside. You know, somebody
could hurt Bo, I mean, really
hurt him, and he would just not let them know. Not until we got home, and
he knew he could let down his
defenses. He really is just a little boy inside. He just wanted to be held,
and just stroked...he just, wanted
me to take away all the pain.
Kayla: Ya well, Bo trusts you. Steve doesn't trust anybody.
Hope: Maybe not yet--but I think he's coming around to you.
Kayla: I don't know about that...
Hope: Kayla he was in a lot of pain before you got here, he called out your name
Kayla: He just didn't know what he was saying
Hope: He may have been in a lot of pain, but it was your name he called.
That's got to mean something. You
care about him don't you?
Kayla: (scared to admit it for the first time) Yes...
Hope: Then don't let him go, don't give up. He's going to drive you crazy,
but that's ok. Look at him Kayla...he
really is a pretty special person.
(they watch him sleep/Hope leaves the room)
Later that night, Kayla is alone watching Steve sleeping. He tries to get
her to leave, but she won't have it, not
until Roman is free (or so she says; Steve- and the audience- have a sneaking
suspicion she is there to watch
over Steve as well).
Rooftop Picnic -chosen by Belinda- aired September 9, 1988
BACKGROUND INFO: Steve and Kayla haven't had much time alone since
their honeymoon and caring for Benjy.
Steve decides to give Kayla a surprise picnic on the rooftop of the loft...Kayla
calls out for Steve who is laying a
blanket on the ground and preparing the picnic. She appears...
Steve: Oh, baby, baby, please don't, don't.... awww you are spoiling my surprise!
Kayla: What is all this?
Steve: Too late. You saw it. It's the official on the roof picnic! We have...
the official checkered tablecloth
(blows harmonica). We got the fried chicken (blows harmonica) and we got
the cheap wine (blows
harmonica).
Kayla: What's the occasion?
Steve: Well, I heard that little Benjymonkey was going out today on a field trip with Peggy.
(Steve takes Kayla's hand and she sits beside him)
Steve: We got him a Police escort and I realized that we are alone.
Kayla: Really? That's what you heard?
Steve: Yeah, yeah. And I heard that we are newlyweds still.
Kayla: Really?
Steve: That's right. And we're allowed to act like newlyweds for the first year of our marriage.
Kayla: Well that's ridiculous. Where did you hear that?
Steve: No. It's from that newlywed game baby, they let people go on there
in their first year of marriage,
that's the truth.
Kayla: Oh.
Steve: So I figured that's the way the rules work. So what do you say we start this off with a little...kiss?
Kayla: As long as you make it a good one.
Steve: Very tasty.
Kayla: Are you sure you don't wanna take this downstairs?
Steve: Oh come on baby, we're all alone here. It's just you and me and the
pigeons. And they're not talking.
They don't speak our language anyway. Front door's locked.
Kayla: Are you sure?
Steve: Pretty sure. Come on. Where's your sense of adventure?
Kayla: In the bedroom.
Steve: No... you don't want to stop and go all the way downstairs now do you?
Kayla: No...
Steve: I don't... I love you baby.
Kayla: I love you.
Steve tells Kayla that at age 5, he tried to Kill Duke
(his father)
- Chosen by Andrea- aired February 23, 1987
BACKGROUND INFO: Our scene begins just after Steve has walked
in and found his father sitting
by Jo's bedside. They get into a fight, Kayla and Neil have help in separating
them. Steve goes to the
lounge and Duke follows him there. Kayla arrives and, after going around
for several minutes, Duke
leaves. This is one of the first times that Steve doesn't go back in a defenive
shell.
Kayla ---"You Ok?"
Steve ---(Angry) "I've been better"
Kayla: "I know"
Steve: "He's a fool for coming here Kayla. Doesn't he have any idea how I
feel about him?. You
know he's the only person I ever really wanted to see dead in my whole life"
Kayla---(she begins to start to cry) "I know I'm usually quick to give advise,
but I really don't
know what to say"
Steve: "There's nothing to say"
Kayla: "I want to help you"
Steve---"NO!, I don't want you invloved"
Kayla---"I'm already involved"
Steve---"No, I don't want to see you hurt"
Kayla---"I can take care of myself"
Steve---"You can't take care of yourself with him. He's a filthy pig. He's nothing but trouble."
Kayla---"Do you want me to go away?"
Steve---(Shakes his head) "No"
Kayla---"I will stay"
Steve: "Ok"
Kayla: " Do you want to talk about it?"
Steve: "He beats her Kayla, every day. He put her in this place. But he won't
fight with me. He's
a drunk and he's a coward! I'm just praying ... for him to just come at me,
just come at me once!!"
(yelling)
Kayla: (starts out yelling) "You know your mother just wants you to
stay away from him. Your
mother's very worried about you."
Steve: "I know"
Kayla: "I'm not trying to interfere, but I told her I'd talk to you. Steve...what
happened to make her so
worried?"
Steve: (turns away, quiets down) "It happened a long time ago...."
Kayla: (Comes up behind him, and softly asks) "What happened a long time
ago?"
Steve: (turns to face her. Looks her in the eyes) "I tried to kill him"
Kayla: "You tried to kill your father?"
Steve: "I couldn't take it any more. All the yelling...all the crying. The
sound of his hand cracking up
against the side of her face... and my baby brother screaming at the top
of his lungs. I was under my
bed in the corner, the pillow wrapped around my head, my hands held tight
on the sides of my face to
keep the sounds out..I just wanted to keep the sounds out. And I'd pray,
don't let her die. Don't let him
kill her. It happened almost every night ,except the nights he didn't come
home at all. One of these times,
after he did his dirt, I came in the room, he was passing out drunk. I remember
I saw the bottle slide
out of his hand and hit the floor. And I knew it was my chance. I got some
matches, and I walked real
careful, real careful, past his bed, to the curtains. And I lit them on fire.
Wooo. Whole place went up,
oh it was pretty. If it wasn't for her, if she hadn't come in the
room....(laughs) He would have been dead. "
Steve: "I was five years old".
Kayla is sobbing, tears rolling down her face
Steve (turns to face her): "That's when they gave me away you know...(laughs).
Makes sense right? I mean,
you can't keep a kid who tries to torch the old man, can you?"
Kayla (crying): "Stop it!"
Steve: "It's true Kayla, I did it, it's all true!"
Kayla: (crying) "You were a little boy!"
Steve (intensely)--- "I knew exactly what I was doing. When I came in that
room and I saw him passing out, I
remembered all those times I had the pillow wrapped around my head so tight,
and I could still see her crying.
And then I knew I had to do it"
Kayla: "It must have been awful."
Steve: You know, most kids they idolize their daddies, I couldn't feel anything for mine but fear and hate.
Kayla: (Crying) "It's understandable. He hurt your mother"
Steve: "Now you understand, now you understand how I feel about my family,
don't you. Now you get the picture.
It wasn't pretty. It wasn't anything like the way you grew up. We didn't
have a happy little home. We didn't have
anything..."
Kayla: "Yes you did...your father may have been a cruel, sick man, but you and your mother..you had a lot..."
Steve: "Kayla..."
Kayla: "You had love!"
Steve: "Kayla, my mother gave me and my baby brother away.."
Kayla: "She was scared for you that's all !..."
Steve: "Scared or not scared, you don't give your kids away, if you love
them you don't give them away.
You know what? I don't believe any of that crap, I don't believe any of that
crap about her giving us away
to protect us. If she loved us, she wouldn't have done it!"
Kayla: "Well maybe you can start new. Maybe you can build a new love with her"
Steve: "All the love in the world isn't going to help this family Kayla.
As long as that sick pig of a father is
still alive. As long as he's around, this family's not gonna have anything
but trouble."
Steve Turns a Corner (In dealing with the fact that Jack raped Kayla) - Chosen by Kris - aired March 16, 1988
Background: Several weeks before, Kayla had been brutally raped by
her husband, Jack Deveraux.
When Steve found out about this heinous act, perpetrated by none other than
his own biological brother,
a big fight ensued between the two men on the roof of the loft. Jack fell
off the roof and nearly died. His
life was saved by none other than a guilt-ridden Steve. At great risk to
his own life, Steve donated a kidney
which gave Jack a new lease on life. Meanwhile, Kayla was going through a
terrible time. She was hurting
more than she had ever hurt before. Jack had once been her friend and she'd
tried to help him. She'd married
him in an effort to give him the will to live, though her heart always belonged
to Steve. In return for that
sacrifice, made on behalf of friendship, Kayla had been terribly mistreated
when things didn't go the way
Jack wanted them. And to make matters worse, the love of her life had saved
the life of her rapist. Did Jack
mean more to Steve than she did? This was the question that tormented Kayla.
She didn't know the answer.
Why should she? When Jack was rejecting the kidney for psychological reasons,
hadn't Steve asked her to
go to Jack, to forgive him? Hadn't he reacted negatively when she told him
she would press charges? She
was plagued with nightmares in which Jack and Steve were close, where they
made light of her suffering,
saying she had overreacted to the rape. Beset by her own fears, Kayla needed
to ask Steve for the ultimate
favor. She needed to ask him to testify on her behalf and against his brother
Jack at a pretrial hearing. Would
he do it? She didn't know. But she had to ask. It would be impossible to
proceed without his cooperation.
She went to Steve. She told him that she needed him to testify against Jack.
The scene begins:
Kayla: Maybe it's not fair that I ask you. Jack IS your brother.
Steve: Did you think I'd put him before you?
Kayla: I don't know.
Steve: You know, baby, when I was in the Merchant Marine, I used to go to
all these different towns. I'd get
shore leave. Every town I went into, I'd walk down the streets and I'd always
notice all the little kids,
especially the boys. Boys that were about the same age as Billy would've
been then. And, uh...I used to think
about Billy all the time so I guess they reminded me of him. I guess it kind
of gave me some hope that I
might find him someday. Then I did. He showed up and I just wanted to wipe
away all the years between us.
I wanted to take care of my baby brother again...give him all the love I
had stored up for him. I would've
done anything in the world for him, Kayla. But no matter what I tried to
do, everything I did for Billy went
sour. Nothing worked. So all this time I've been trying to figure out why.
Kayla: Have you?
Steve: Well, yeah. It's because it was all a dream. It was all a fantasy,
baby. I...Billy was a little baby they
took away from me in the orphanage. I loved that baby. But I hate what he
turned into. I've been trying
to deny that, you know. I've just been trying hard not to see that. So I
just had to admit that to myself, that's all.
Kayla (softly) Steve...
Steve: Oh, baby. I've been trying to divide myself between you and Billy.
But there is no more Billy. Only you.
I'll testify for you, baby. I'll do anything to make you happy. Anything
to take away the pain I gave you.
They move toward each other. They embrace for a brief moment. Mickey comes
over. He needs to be sure
that Kayla is still going ahead. It won't be easy, he warns. But Kayla is
not one to shrink away from a
difficult challenge. She is determined and will go ahead. Assured that this
is what Kayla wants, Mickey leaves.
Kayla and Steve look at each other. Kayla moves toward Steve.
Kayla: We're all set then, huh?
Steve: Yeah. Baby, it's good you don't have to do this alone anymore, huh?
Kayla moves into his arms. This time, she lingers and allows herself to really lean on him.
Kayla: (softly) I was scared by myself.
Steve: (with regret) I know.
Kayla: I felt so far away from you. I don't like feeling far away from you.
Steve: I didn't like it, either.
Kayla: So I like it better this way. US. TOGETHER.
Steve: Me, too. Me too, baby.
Kayla's jealous of Britta (2 scenes) -Chosen by Tami- aired August 26, 1986
Background: Prior to this scene Steve and Britta had a night together.
In the morning Britta was
taking pictures of Steves tattoo. In this scene she is in the bathroom
and a shirtless Steve is making
the bed. There is a knock on the door.
Kayla: Steve? Its me Kayla. Wake up its important.
S: What is it?
Hes about to put his shirt on.
K: Its about Frankie
He throws the shirt on the bed and moves to the stairs.
S: Whats the matter with him? Is he in trouble?
K: If you open the door Ill explain.
Steve opens the door and Kayla enters and goes down the stairs.
S: Oops, Sorry I wasnt decent.
Kayla crosses the room and doesnt see Britta exit from the bathroom
S: Is he hurt?
K: I dont know, but he didnt come
She sees Britta. Britta, clad in only a black teddy, gives Kayla a smug look
as she crosses the room to stand
between Steve and Kayla to get her clothes. Kayla looks embarrassed as she
puts it all together.
Britta: Hello, Kayla
Steve is amused and has to look around Britta to keep Kaylas attention.
S: Well, go on
A flustered Kayla cant stop looking at Britta
K: As I was saying . Uh .
S: Frankie. Frankie.
K: Frankie, right. Frankie. Im worried about him. He didnt come home last night.
S: He didnt come home last night? What about Max?
Britta turns her back to Steve faces Kayla and smiles very smugly before
taking her clothes to the bathroom.
Both of them watch her exit. Kayla is still flustered.
K: Max um is fine. Its just when my mother went to wake up Frankie it didnt look like
Steve is going through his wallet
K: He hadn't slept in it all night and I was just hoping that maybe you would know where he was.
S: Now why would I know that?
K: I dont know. He seems to trust you. I even thought maybe he spent
the night here last night
(she says this last part slowly knowing that he didnt)
Steve gives her a self-satisfied sort of look.
S: No he didnt spend the night here.
Britta comes out of the bathroom buttoning her shirt.
K: No I guess he didnt.
Kayla looks at Britta quickly then says: Good-bye Britta. Steve. Kayla dashes
up the stairs, out the door
and shuts it behind her. Steve laughs as he puts his shirt on.
B: Whats so funny?
S: Oh, nothin, baby. I gotta get outta here.
B: Something wrong?
S: No, you just lock the door before you go.
B: Right
She looks disappointed that hes leaving. He dashes up the stairs and
out the door, but before the door
shuts he yells: Kayla! And Britta looks upset.
****************************************
Kayla is on the lower dock, pacing and looking a little upset.
S: (funny voice) Nurse Brady!
Steve jumps down from the upper level.
S: Woo!
Kayla turns and looks at him but says nothing.
S: You are Nurse Brady, arent you?
K: (disgusted) Excuse me.
She turns to walk away but he grabs her arm then moves to stand in front of her.
S: No. Not until you tell me why you rushed out of my place so quick.
K: I wanted to start looking for Frankie. OK? Can I go?
She tries to pass but he stops her.
S: Nooo. Is that the reason?
He has a cat that ate the canary smile on. She looks miffed that she has to have this conversation with him.
K: Yes.
S: Naaah. Come on Kayla. I saw those pretty little cheekies blush when you
saw that beautiful woman in
my place. (His voice gets huskier) That beautiful sexy woman.
Kaylas state of miffed-ness intensifies.
K: Dont be ridiculous.
S: And didnt I detect a hint of jealousy there too?
K: Oh, dont flatter yourself, Steve.
S: Im just tellin you what I saw, Sweetness.
K: Well, maybe you need to have your eyesight checked.
S: Uhuh
K: You think I care who you got in that room?
S: I think maybe you do.
K: Look. I have better things to do. Like find Frankie.
She tries to walk past him, but he moves to stop her.
S: All by yourself?
K: I can handle it.
S: You can? Now wasnt it just about five minutes ago a young woman
named Kayla was bangin on my door
beggin for my help?
K: I was not begging. And even if I needed your help you obviously had better things to do.
Steve smiles and nods. Frankie shows up and they deal with him. After Frankie
leaves Steve and Kayla talk
some more and end with:
S: This may come as a shock to you sweet heart, but being a part of Salems
Brady bunch isnt the answer to
every kids prayer.
K: Why am I wasting my time talking to you? I mean how can I possibly expect
you to understand anything
about caring and warmth?
S: Thats right baby, Im an iceberg, arent I?
K: Because to care about somebody you need to have a little bit of human
kindness. Some sensitivity. You
happen to be lacking greatly in both of those things.
Steves tone changes to a softer one.
S: Im chock full of human kindness and sensitivity. Its just that Im afraid.
Kayla looks concerned but wary.
K: Afraid of what?
S: Im afraid of intimacy. Afraid of getting close.
He puts a hand on either side of her neck.
S: I want to learn how to love. (He breaks into a big smile) Are you givin
lessons Nurse Brady? (Sticks his tongue
waaaaay out)
She knocks his hands away and he laughs. She hits him in the stomach with her purse.
K: From what I saw in your apartment this afternoon, I dont think youd have time to fit me into your schedule.
S: Oooooooooooo.
Kayla blushes.
K: I mean
S: I know what you meant, baby, and Im flattered. Youre jealous arent you?
K: (ticked) I am NOT jealous
S: Youre not jealous?
K: No!
S: Good. Because guess what. Im too much man for one woman. Whatever you want from me, baby, you can take it.
K: What ever youre offering Steve
S: Uhuh
K: You can keep it.
She gives him a shove before running up the stairs. Steve has a look on his
face like he wished he had n't
just said the things he did.
Steve's jealous of Chris - Chosen by Tami - aired September 2, 1986
Background: Kayla is at Shenanigans and is preparing to give Steve
the harmonica that she bought to
replace the one that he lost. Steve comes in and sees Kayla. She becomes
flustered. Britta calls to Steve
and Kayla chickens out. Steve goes and sits with Britta. Kayla is standing
there looking at them when Chris
Kositchek comes over and talks to Kayla. He invites her to the Arts Counsel
something or other. They move
over to the bar and Steve cant stop staring at them. Much to the chagrin
of Britta. Steve and Britta chat about
Gregorys death. Then Steve turns around to watch Kayla leave with Chris.
Kayla returns his look. Next we see
a Salem picnic (several characters are there). Chris shudders and takes off
his jacket.
C: Bit chilly. Here take this.
He puts the jacket around Kaylas shoulders.
K: Matches my outfit.
Then we see Steve lurking in the bushes watching them. It starts to rain
and everyone runs but Chris and Kayla
(and Steve).
C: Ive got the blanket.
C: Im not sure this is much better.
K: Cozier anyway. (She giggles)
C: Put this over you.
The rain has let up. Steve is still hiding and watching them.
C: What I tell ya? Did the rain stop or did the rain stop?
K: Oh, I love it after a rain. Everything smells so fresh.
C: Hey! You know what? I just had a great idea.
K: What?
C: Why dont we take a walk? Ill bet theres some more of that smell right down there that road down there.
K: (giggles) Ill go.
They take a walk and Steve walks over to where they just were. He sees a
pay phone, reaches in his pocket,
puts the money in the phone and starts to dial. Then he stops and hangs up.
Just then it starts to rain again and Chris and Kayla come running back.
Steve hides again. They run past
and Chris yells to Kayla to run for the car. Steve comes out of hiding and
makes his phone call. Then we see
Britta in her room with a knocked out Bo on the bed and the phone is off
the hook.
Steve hears a busy signal.
S: Thats good, baby. Youre home. Right where I need you.
